Sparkling weather created almost perfect conditions for the twenty-nine boats competing in last Saturday’s winter inshore race at FSC. A gentle but variable South Easterly breeze meant no reefs were needed and the spinnaker divisions made the most of it with mamy kites flown. Course thirteen took most boats in to B and or L marks where there was less wind and more current from the river, however a short drift brought most boats back out into the breeze again.
No boats raced in Division Zero with Enterprise opting to switch to JAM division.
Eight boats raced in Division One with David Davenport’s EFYC boat Crush taking first and fastest on TCF handicap from Michael Sproxton’s Fat Wallet Lost in second place and Graham Martin’s Sand Crab’s Disco in third. On IRC handicap Crush was also first and fastest from Sand Crab’s Disco with Roger Passmore’s Aquila in third place. It was great to see Dominic Di Latte’s Baci flying a spinnaker with only two crew aboard. Peter Cochrane’s Raya was DSQ.
In Division two thirteen boats raced and the light conditions spread the fleet across the course with nearly forty minutes separating first and last to finish. David Atkinson’s Igawa took first on TCF handicap from Ernie Delfos’s Windswept with Trevor Taylor’s No Etiquette in third place. No Etiquette was first of the four sport boats that took the next four places. Bruce Wilkinson’s Turkish Delight was fastest. There was some tight racing further down the fleet with only nineteen seconds separating Ron Kooy’s Venustus (making a welcome return to racing) from Michael Thorpe’s Soon. On IRC handicap it was again a day for the sports boats with Jason Poutsma’s Hustler first ahead of No Etiquette in second and David Atkinson’s Igawa in third place.
In Division Six (Jib and Main) John Palmer’s Witchy Woman (sailed by Conrad Todd) took first on TCF handicap from Jane Laws’ Ambience with Alan Nuttall’s Counterpoint third. Unsurprisingly Anthony Kirke’s Enterprise was fastest! Morgan Flower’s Émigré retired in the light airs. J Halvorsen’s Giddy Up was first on IRC in JAM ahead of Enterprise (also fastest) with Witchy Woman in third place.
Presentations were made in the Sailor’s bar after the race by newly re-elected Inshore Captain Brian Cooper. Thanks to our Race Control Crew on Success who had a much more pleasant time than in the previous windy race.
