THE GIRLS ARE HOT TO TROT

Things are hotting up in the women’s department of the angling section.

Denise Bech has reigned supreme in recent times but suddenly challenges are coming port, starboard and centre. Well left and right, anyway.

The January 6 competition, fished in reasonably good conditions, saw young Kelly Tann – everybody’s young when your 71^st birthday is the day following the comp – throwing out a challenge.

Truth is that Kelly is in fact young, and with a nice pinkie and the heaviest dhufish (3.76kg) of the season, saw her shoot to the front in the women’s section with 165.44 points, leading marginally from Denise (159.8) and Sangeeta Menon (156.8).

But Denise also enjoyed her day, taking the target fish prize after landing a modest .6kg break-sea cod, made all the more satisfying because she pipped Hubbie John by a slender margin.

In fact Craig Thomas scored the biggest break-sea but because he was a convincing winner overall (99.36), he couldn’t claim two prizes.

Craig and his crew landed three break-sea and a nice pinkie, also releasing an estimated 6kg queen snapper because of demersal restrictions.

And with 15 king george shared between them it was a good day out for Craig and his mates who estimates he used about 110 litres in his explorations which included a flit beyond Rottnest to 100m.

Rear commodore Nev Norkett capped his day with a superb harlequin fish, by the far the best harlequin weighed in over the last decade. The February competition is scheduled for February 3, 2024.
