A fleet of seventeen boats with ninety-one crew took to the water for FSC’s Inshore Sections’ annual Australia Day Race last Sunday. The race is a non-consistency JAM (jib and main) race with spinnakers banned in all divisions, a custom course, no IRC results, and a holiday atmosphere prevailing. Thanks to Race Control on Success for the longer start line for the combined fleet start.
Division one boasted a strong fleet of eight boats and a longer course. Winston Scotney’s Corniche came out on top after the results had to be recalculated when it was realised they’d initially been counted as a JAM boat. Apologies to Peter Cochrane and the Raya crew who took second place in the recalculated results ahead of John Palmer’s Witchy Woman. James Halvorsen’s Giddy Up was fastest. We welcomed a number of additions to the fleet – Noel Murphy’s Southern Star kept Giddy Up on her toes and K & K Bruce’s 56’ X562 Moo turned heads with her sleek good looks whilst Clodagh Irwin’s French Kiss V was the sole retirement. Peter Kennington’s Cro Connection completed the fleet.
Only four boats raced in Division two with Peter Williams’ Pipedream III, helmed by each crew member in turn, taking first on handicap from Brian Cooper’s Valkyr after a duel to the line. Valkyr finished six seconds ahead on the course but seven seconds astern after the handicaps were applied and Brian must’ve rued the 360 penalty turn he had to take after Valkyr made minor contact with Alan Nuttall Div. 6. boat Counterpoint at F mark. Michael Thorpe’s Soon was in third place with Ron Kooy’s Venustus rounding out the fleet.
Five boats raced in Division six, normally the only JAM division. Jane Laws’ kept up her consistent form this season with a first place in Ambience ahead of Vice Commodore Anita Wyntje’s Flying Sorceress with Mick Gillum’s Panacea taking third and fastest in the fleet. Rafe Bellofiore’s Beluga scored a DNF.
Presentations of pennants (and Australian themed stubby holders for the placegetters) were made by Inshore Captain Brian Cooper, with results calculated in the handicapper’s absence by publicity officer Frances Hammond.
