Fixing the Frade FPSO

When cracks were found underwater on this floating facility in Brazilian waters, the operator mobilised a team of divers to undertake the repair.

What caused the damage? Why use divers to fix it? How did they do it … and why did they take so long?

Guest Speaker and raconteur Ewan Rowell will address these questions at the March Dive Section Meeting.

Before Ewan became secretary of the FSC Dive Section, he worked as a subsea engineer in the Oil and Gas industry, watching divers and ROVs install, inspect, maintain and remove seabed structures, pipelines and Xmas trees in the waters off Europe, Africa and Australia.

From 2016 to 2018 he worked as a diving superintendent on the Frade FPSO in the Campos Basin, 370km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, where the water is 1100m deep.

Wednesday 1st March at 1930 hours in the Bridge room
