Peter McMahon presents:
Dive Talk: The RMS Niagara and the Underwater Gold Mine
2 November 2022

Bridge Room | Following the dive meeting at 1930

During the night of 14 June 1940 off the coast of New Zealand, the Royal Mail Ship Niagara struck a mine planted by a Nazi raider and sank in 70 fathoms (130m) of water. But what happened to the 8½ tons of solid gold bars and the 150 people on board? This is a great story with heavy involvement from Australia. Come to the November dive meeting and hear Hard Hat diver and raconteur extraordinaire Peter McMahon recount the exciting history of this ship and the aftermath of its treasure.
