WAIODA TEAM RACING Championships

Last Saturday 16th November Fremantle Sailing Club was represented by two teams of four sailors in each team (Blue and Grey) at the 2019 WAIODA state team racing champs held at Hillarys Yacht Club.

The teams looked fantastic in the recently refurbished “mini offshore” club optimists and both teams sailed well on what was a tricky day with a hot easterly giving way to a westerly. The wind change halfway through the morning however did allow the sailors to cool off with a quick swim while the race committee reset the course.

The racing started off with FSC Team Blue vs FSC Team Grey which team Grey won, it was then on to the rest of the round robin with Team Freo sailing against teams from the home team at Hillarys, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht ClubRoyal Perth Yacht Club and South of Perth Yacht Club.

Unfortunately due to the conditions, not all the races were able to be completed before the midday deadline.
There was some very close racing with most races changing lead multiple times and some great mark blocks being put into effect by the well drilled Team Freo.

After the results were tallied it was a very close series with Team Freo Grey tying with Royal Perth on points but getting second on countback and Team Freo Blue tying for third but getting Fourth on countback.

Both Team Freo Blue and Grey would like to say thanks to Coach Rome for coaching on the day and in the lead up to the event with coaching on Teams racing Tuesdays. Also a special shout out to the offshore fleet and Head Coach Thor for setting up the club Opti’s to mirror their bigger offshore brothers.
