In true winter fashion, and after losing the first race of the season to a gale warning last week, this week’s race turned out to be a light airs drifter with Thirty-two boats out on the water in four divisions. Unfortunately, the failing breeze and southerly current were too much for much of the fleet with fourteen boats scoring either DNF or RET. As often the case in winter races, rounding N mark was something of a challenge with the current setting to the south. Congratulations to all who made the finish inside the time limit. Welcome to all the returning boats, new boats and visiting boats!
The winter series now includes a Division Zero fleet, however only one boat competed on Saturday – Anthony Kirke’s Enterprise, which, unsurprising took first and fastest in IRC and TCF handicaps. We look forward to having more Div. Zero competitors in subsequent races.
Eight boats raced in Division One with only three managing to complete their course within the time limit. David Davenport’s Crush (from East Fremantle) taking first and fastest on both IRC and TCF handicaps. Local boats took the remaining places with Peter Kennington’s The Cro Connection second and Roger Passmore’s Aquila third, having taken three hours twenty-four minutes and five seconds to complete the course. Welcome to Royal Freshwater’s Cannonball (D. Cannon) in their first FSC race.
A strong fleet of thirteen boats raced in Division Two with Richard Webster’s Freddie Fudpucker creating a bit of slow speed drama with a tack onto port on the start line. Only five boats completed the course within the time limit, with three scoring DNF and five retiring when it became obvious they could not finish in time. Pipedream III took the opportunity to enjoy their after-race snacks at sea. Trevor Taylor’s No Etiquette (CYC) took first on TCF handicap from Bruce Wilkinson’s Turkish Delight (EFYC) with Jason Poutsma’s Huslter the first Freo boat to finish in third place. On IRC Turkish Delight was first with No Etiquette second and Hustler again third. The only non-sports boat to finish was Ernie Delfos’s Windswept in third place ahead of Mirko Moeller’s Jedi.
The most successful fleet on the day was JAM/Div. 6 with eight out of the ten competitors successfully completing their shorter course. Winston Scotney’s Corniche took first on TCF handicap from James Halvorsen’s Giddy Up with Jane Law’s Ambience in third place (despite reporting drifting away from the mark faster than they could sail towards it mid-race). Giddy Up was fastest. IRC results for JAM on Sportspage are provisional as we are awaiting IRC certificates for some of the JAM entrants. Welcome back to Ian Joel’s Jubilant, Alan Nuttall’s Counterpoint and welcome to M Flower’s Émigré.
Presentations were made in the Sailors Bar by Inshore Captain Brian Cooper (once the closing announcements for the Wine Expo were finished) assisted by Jaye Martin (who also assisted with the results – thanks Jaye). Next Saturday is the Arlene race, the first Valmadre Offshore race of the season so Inshore racing returns on Saturday 29th of June.
